PORTAGE, MI – A series of severe thunderstorms unleashing multiple tornadoes have wreaked havoc on southern Michigan, causing significant damage in their path.
Reports indicate that several tornadoes made landfall in Kalamazoo County in West Michigan, near Portage, and one in Calhoun County. Concurrently, a tornado watch is in effect for Lenawee, Monroe, and Washtenaw counties in southeast Michigan, along with severe thunderstorm warnings, including hail and powerful winds, in southeastern Livingston County and southern Oakland County.
Authorities in Portage have confirmed that there were no serious injuries reported following the tornadoes that battered various residential and commercial buildings in the area. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and refrain from driving to allow first responders unimpeded access.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a state of emergency for several counties in Southwest Michigan, including Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch, and Cass. Governor Whitmer expressed sympathy for those affected by the severe weather and assured the provision of expedited resources to the region. The State Emergency Operations Center has been activated to coordinate response efforts.
Just after a devastating tornado struck Portage, another tornado was reported near the area, with additional tornadoes confirmed west of Battle Creek. Multiple buildings, including a FedEx facility, were severely damaged by the tornadoes. Emergency crews are working diligently to assess the situation and provide aid to affected residents.
Utility companies have reported that over 27,000 Consumers Energy customers and 3,100 Midwest Energy & Communications customers are currently without power due to the storms. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorm warnings with wind speeds reaching up to 70 mph are still in place for Jackson and Battle Creek, among other areas.
In St. Joseph County, Undersheriff Jason Bingaman confirmed widespread damage throughout the county. Search and rescue operations are a top priority, followed by assessments of the extent of the damage. The National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Livingston County and north Washtenaw County.
