Tornadoes wreak havoc across central United States
Over the past few days, tornadoes have been tearing through several states in the central United States, causing destruction and loss of life. Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee have all been hit by tornadoes, and Illinois is now bracing itself for the next wave.
The storms have been particularly severe in Arkansas, where three people have already lost their lives due to the tornadoes. The damage in other states, including Iowa and Illinois, has also been extensive, with buildings and vehicles destroyed and power lines down.
Entergy Arkansas, the state’s primary energy provider, has called on its customers to prepare for severe storms, reminding them to charge their phones and other electronics, stock up on food and water supplies, and stay away from downed power lines.
The Arkansas Storm Team has warned that severe weather is likely to continue throughout the day, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid driving if possible. The team has also issued tornado watches and warnings for several counties in the state, urging residents to take shelter immediately if they hear sirens or see threatening weather.
Both CNN and Fox News have called the tornadoes “catastrophic,” with Fox News reporting that the storms have already impacted several cities’ infrastructure, including Little Rock.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has noted that this year has seen a higher incidence of tornadoes than usual, with 1,638 recorded as of May 18. The NWS has attributed the uptick to a combination of factors, including climate change and natural variability.
As the storm continues to move through the central United States, residents are advised to stay up-to-date on the latest warnings and advisories and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
