San Juan, Puerto Rico — A 25-year-old man from New York was shot and killed early Sunday morning while visiting Puerto Rico to attend a concert by the popular artist Bad Bunny, local authorities reported. Kevin Mares was gunned down in La Perla, a well-known seaside neighborhood near Old San Juan that has seen its share of violence over the years.

The incident occurred around dawn at a venue known as “Shelter for Mistreated Men.” According to police, Mares was shot in the abdomen during a confrontation involving several individuals, one of whom opened fire. Two residents of La Perla were also injured in the attack and remain hospitalized.

Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz from the homicide division stated that Mares was an innocent bystander alongside friends from New York. He emphasized that the investigation is in its initial stages, and police are working to determine a motive behind the shooting. “We can’t rule anything out until everything is thoroughly investigated,” Ruiz noted.

La Perla is adjacent to Old San Juan, a historic district that attracts countless tourists. The community used to be notorious for drug-related violence, but it has become more accessible in recent years after significant law enforcement actions. A raid in 2011 by federal agents led to the arrest of numerous individuals, helping to make the area safer.

Despite improvements, violent incidents still occur. The neighborhood gained some notoriety after being featured in the popular song “Despacito,” which brought renewed attention and tourism. However, previous incidents have underscored the ongoing risks, including stabbings and attacks on tourists. In February, for instance, three visitors were attacked after being asked to stop filming.

This year’s homicide rate in Puerto Rico remains a concern. With 277 killings reported so far, the island experienced a slight decline compared to the same period last year, which saw 325 homicides. The local police and community leaders continue to work on strategies to enhance safety for both residents and visitors.
