Late Wednesday night, a fire erupted at Export Street and Marsh Street in Newark, where a ship was docked at Port Newark. The Newark Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of multiple vehicles on fire. The fire originated on the 10th deck of the ship, named the Grande Costa D’Avorio, while crew members and local stevedores were in the process of moving cars, vans, and trucks.
Upon arrival, the firefighters located the fire, which had spread to the 11th and 12th floors, engulfing five to seven vehicles. Despite their best efforts, the intense heat pushed the firefighters back, leading to the tragic loss of two unidentified firefighters. Newark Fire Chief Rufus Jackson expressed his sorrow, stating that the firefighters were eventually found inside the ship and pronounced dead.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, present at the scene, expressed his condolences and highlighted the magnitude of the tragedy. He emphasized the inherent dangers faced by firefighters when entering burning structures. Fortunately, there were no electric cars or hazardous cargo on board, and the ship was not at risk of sinking or spilling fuel. Typically operating between the U.S. and West Africa, the Grande Costa D’Avorio carries over 1,200 new and used vehicles, as well as 157 containers.
Governor Phil Murphy expressed his condolences and acknowledged the sacrifice made by the two Newark firefighters. He extended his sympathies to their families and loved ones, while also wishing a full and speedy recovery to those injured.
