Hurghada, Egypt – Six Russian tourists tragically lost their lives after a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea near the Egyptian city of Hurghada. The incident also resulted in the rescue of thirty-nine individuals, with nine reported to be injured, including four in critical condition. Among the deceased were two children, as reported by Russia’s Tass news agency, citing a Russian official.
The cause of the submarine sinking remains under investigation, leaving authorities searching for answers. The Sinbad, the vessel involved in the tragedy, went down around 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT).
This incident marks the second recent tragedy involving a tourist vessel in the Red Sea, following a capsized boat near Marsa Allam in November that resulted in 11 individuals missing and presumed dead. The tourist submarine, operated by Sindbad Submarines, had been taking passengers on expeditions to explore coral reefs off the Hurghada coastline for several years.
The passengers aboard the Sindbad included individuals from Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden, along with five Egyptian crew members. The Red Sea governor, Amr Hanafy, confirmed that the six casualties were Russian, but further details about the victims are pending release.
Investigations into the underwater accident are ongoing, with reports suggesting that the submarine hit a reef and lost pressure while submerged at a depth of 20 meters (65 feet). The tragedy has deeply affected the families of the deceased, including two married doctors whose daughters are currently receiving medical care.
Hurghada, located southeast of Cairo, is a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beaches and vibrant coral reefs. Sindbad Submarines’ website advertised tours that allow passengers to explore underwater depths of up to 25 meters (82 feet). Assessments from previous passengers, like Dr. James Aldridge from Bristol, commended the sub’s maintenance and professionalism of the crew, emphasizing safety protocols and the integrity of the vessel.
