Tragic Shooting at Morgan State University: 5 Bystanders Wounded During Homecoming Celebrations

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police are on the hunt for suspects after five bystanders were injured in a shooting during homecoming week celebrations at Morgan State University. According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the injured individuals were “unintended targets” in what appears to be a dispute between two smaller groups. Four of the victims are students at Morgan State University, and one has been released from the hospital. The injured individuals, ranging in age from 18 to 22, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Worley stated that there were multiple individuals with weapons at the scene, but investigators are still working to determine how many guns were fired. It is believed that one person was the target of two individuals with guns, and the five victims who were injured were not the intended targets.

In response to the incident, Morgan State University President David Wilson announced the cancellation or postponement of all homecoming activities, including a pep rally, parade, and concert. Additionally, classes have been canceled for the rest of the week, with increased security measures being implemented on campus.

During a news conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed sympathy for the Morgan community and emphasized the need for action at the national level to address gun violence. The White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, also extended condolences and stated that President Joe Biden is committed to providing support to those impacted by gun violence.

Following the shooting, Wisdom Cole, the national director of the youth and college division of the NAACP, called for immediate action to protect young people from the constant threat of gun violence.

The shooting occurred during a coronation ceremony as part of Morgan State University’s homecoming week. Police initially believed there may have been an active shooter due to shattered windows, but the situation was later deemed no longer an “active shooting” situation.

Morgan State University, one of the nation’s most diverse historically Black colleges and universities, has approximately 9,100 students enrolled.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
