Trump Supporter Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Capitol Riot Ax Attack and Assault on Officers

WASHINGTON (AP) — A supporter of former President Donald Trump who vandalized the Capitol during the January 6 riot was sentenced to seven years in federal prison on Friday. Shane Jenkins, known as “Skullet” due to his shaved head and mullet hairstyle, was convicted in March on nine criminal counts, including felony civil disorder and destruction of government property.

The federal government had sought a sentence of more than 19 years for Jenkins, which would have been one of the longest sentences handed down in any January 6 case. The longest sentence thus far was given to Enrique Tarrio, the ex-leader of the Proud Boys, who received 22 years last month after being found guilty of seditious conspiracy.

At Friday’s sentencing hearing, Jenkins’ attorney described the Capitol riot as “one of the saddest episodes in American history” and criticized those who continue to propagate false claims about the 2020 election. The government, on the other hand, characterized Jenkins’ actions as “egregious” and argued that he had planned for violence well before arriving in Washington.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David Perri underscored Jenkins’ lack of remorse and his acceptance of political violence, questioning how he would react if his preferred candidate faced legal consequences. Jenkins’ defense attorney Dennis Boyle argued that Trump’s promotion of false information had influenced vulnerable individuals like Jenkins.

Jenkins spoke of his troubled past, including a troubled childhood and the killing of his stepfather in a self-defense incident at the age of 20. He also mentioned his participation in an assault on another Capitol defendant following his arrest on January 6.

Since the attack on the Capitol, over 1,100 individuals have been arrested, with approximately 660 already sentenced. Nearly 400 defendants have received prison sentences.
