Twitter Rebranded as ‘X’ by Elon Musk, Sparking Social Media Chaos: Gene X Hwang Loses Username in the Process

Twitter Rebrands as “X” with New Logo

San Francisco, CA – In a move to transform the struggling social media giant, Twitter has been rebranded as “X” and unveiled its new logo, replacing the iconic blue bird. The change was announced by Elon Musk, who has been vocal about his intentions for the platform.

Gene X Hwang, a long-time Twitter user and owner of the handle @x, knew that his days on the platform were numbered. With Musk’s tweets hinting at the name change, Hwang anticipated the inevitable. Following a pinball tournament in Canada, Hwang received a flood of messages on his phone, alerting him to the happening. Soon after, he received an email from the company offering to preserve his account data while providing compensation in the form of merchandise, a tour of their offices, and a meeting with company management.

The rebranding comes as part of Musk’s vision to create “the everything app” and a U.S. equivalent to China’s WeChat. Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino envision X as a hub for communication, banking, commerce, and other services. However, some experts remain skeptical about the platform’s ability to achieve this ambitious goal.

Jennifer Grygiel, a professor at Syracuse University, expressed doubt in Musk’s ability to gain enough trust from users to integrate financial institutions and transactions. She believes that his user base may not be willing to adopt X in the same way that Chinese users have embraced WeChat.

Hwang, like many others, has been exploring alternative platforms in light of the changes on Twitter. He mentioned looking into options such as Threads, Mastodon, and Bluesky, but for now, he remains on Twitter. Hwang noted that Twitter has undergone significant changes, and it remains to be seen how much longer he will stay on the platform.

The rebranding of Twitter marks a significant shift for the social media company as it aims to redefine its purpose and appeal to a broader audience. Only time will tell if Musk’s vision for X as the “everything app” will be realized or if users will continue to seek out alternative platforms in search of different experiences.
