Ukraine Strikes Russian Navy Base in Black Sea, Russia Responds
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea region has escalated with reports of Ukrainian sea drones attacking a Russian navy base near the port of Novorossiysk. This major hub for Russian exports was temporarily paralyzed as a result of the attack. Russian warships swiftly responded, destroying the Ukrainian drones.
According to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which operates an oil terminal in Novorossiysk, the attack led to a halt in all ship movement at the port. This marks the first known instance of a Ukrainian attack on one of Russia’s primary commercial ports.
Numerous Russian social media users reported hearing explosions and gunfire in the vicinity of Novorossiysk on the morning of the attack. Videos circulated online show the movement of ships off the coast, accompanied by the sound of gunfire from the direction of the sea.
The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, responsible for loading oil onto tankers in Novorossiysk, confirmed that ship movement had been temporarily barred. However, they assured that their facilities remained undamaged and that oil loadings were continuing onto tankers that were already moored.
The emergency services of Novorossiysk have corroborated reports of blasts, and the security services have been informed. As one of the largest ports in the Black Sea, this attack has significant implications for regional stability.
The ongoing clashes in the Black Sea and adjacent ports have intensified since Russia’s refusal last month to extend a deal that allowed for the safe export of grain from Ukrainian ports. In response, Russian drones and missiles have targeted several Ukrainian port facilities and grain silos in or near the Black Sea.
Russia has also reported an attack by Ukrainian sea drones on its warships, which were escorting a civilian vessel. Additionally, Russian air defense systems successfully downed 10 Ukrainian drones over Crimea and neutralized three more through electronic countermeasures.
