UNLV Community in Mourning After Deadly Campus Shooting Rampage

LAS VEGAS, NV – A gunman stormed through the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Wednesday, leaving a tragic wake of death and fear. Three people lost their lives, with another sustaining critical injuries. The assailant, subsequently neutralized by responding officers, was identified as a professor with past ties to the university.

Sources close to the investigation disclosed that the shooter was a professor who had unsuccessfully applied for a position at UNLV. He previously held a post at East Carolina University in North Carolina, as revealed by a source under the condition of anonymity due to restrictions on public release of information.

The suspect, 67-year-old Anthony Polito, became the focus of the police investigation which included a search of a related Henderson, Nevada, residence. Electronics and Polito’s cellphone were seized for examination, as indicated by another source not authorized to publicly discuss investigative details.

This event is recorded as the most devastating shooting in Las Vegas since the October 2017 massacre on the Las Vegas Strip, just miles from the UNLV campus. Learning from that harrowing event led to improved emergency response, allowing the police to swiftly and effectively contain the UNLV situation, according to Sheriff Kevin McMahill.

The gunman embarked on his rampage around 11:45 a.m., targeting the Lee Business School building, ultimately engaging in gunfire with university police detectives. The campus was declared secure approximately 40 minutes following the initial alarms.

In the midst of sunny campus festivities, the incident imposed a chilling contrast. The besieged students and staff endured moments of terror before they could evacuate. Kevaney Martin, a professor at UNLV, recounted the reality of sheltering with students and faculty, underscored by the heartbreak of a community in shock.

Witnesses have described the chilling sounds of gunfire, but the type of weapon used has yet to be confirmed. The identities of the victims and specifics on a motive remain unreported at this point.

UNLV has suspended classes until the following Monday, marking a period of mourning and contemplation over a senseless act of violence that cut short the journey of education and dreams. The tragedy extends to the world of sports as well, with the UNLV basketball team’s game being canceled in the wake of the shooting.
