SALT LAKE CITY — An urgent appeal for public assistance has been made by U.S. officials as they continue their investigation into the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah. New footage and images from the incident, captured during a speaking event on a university campus, have been released in hopes of identifying the gunman.

Over 24 hours after the shooting, Utah Governor Spencer Cox addressed the media alongside FBI Director Kash Patel and other law enforcement representatives, stating, “We need as much help as we can possibly get.” The FBI has reportedly collected over 7,000 leads and tips, emphasizing the vital role public input plays in their investigation.

The released video shows a person of interest, described as wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, hat, and sunglasses, fleeing the scene. The suspect is believed to have climbed off a rooftop and disappeared into a nearby neighborhood shortly after firing a single shot.

Investigators have gathered various pieces of evidence, including a palm print and a shoe impression, as well as a high-powered hunting rifle discovered in a wooded area along the suspect’s escape route. Despite this evidence, authorities have not yet named a suspect or determined a motive for the attack.

During a nighttime press conference, officials expressed difficulties in locating the shooter, underscoring the importance of public cooperation. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the individual involved.

This tragic incident has reignited discussions about the rising threat of political violence across the country. Kirk, who was closely associated with the political landscape and had strong ties to former President Donald Trump, was seen as a divisive figure within the political arena. Kirk’s body was flown back to Arizona aboard Air Force Two, accompanied by Vice President JD Vance. Mourners gathered to pay their respects, and Vance, who assisted in carrying Kirk’s casket, highlighted Kirk’s significant contributions to the conservative movement and his role in the administration.

In response to the shooting, Trump indicated that he would posthumously award Kirk the Medal of Freedom. He spoke to Kirk’s family and asserted that authorities were making progress in identifying the shooter, although he remained ambiguous about the motives behind the attack.
