US Officials Warn Iran and Allies Against Regional Escalation Amid Israel-Hamas War

Washington, D.C. – In response to Israel’s recent conflict with Hamas, the United States has cautioned Iran and its allies against any further regional escalation, according to two top U.S. officials on Sunday. This comes as the Pentagon increases military readiness in the area and orders non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in Iraq. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern over the possibility of Iranian proxies escalating attacks on American personnel and emphasized the importance of not exploiting the situation to target Israel or U.S. personnel. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned against widening the conflict and affirmed the U.S.’ right to defend itself.

The U.S. has experienced attacks from drones and rockets in Iraq and Syria, prompting a group of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq to issue a warning for U.S. forces to leave immediately. In response, Blinken stated that the U.S. is taking measures to defend its personnel and is prepared to respond decisively if necessary. Austin further acknowledged the challenges of a ground invasion, citing Hamas’ underground network of tunnels as an obstacle. He expects the fight to be characterized by urban combat, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and booby traps.

The Pentagon’s decision to increase readiness in the region comes after recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces. Austin has activated the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and additional Patriot battalions throughout the region. The State Department has also issued a directive for non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Arbil due to increased security threats. In addition, a travel advisory has been updated, advising U.S. citizens not to travel to Iraq.

There have been concerns about Iranian proxy Hezbollah and other terror groups taking advantage of the situation to escalate the conflict and test Israel’s military capabilities. To address these concerns, Austin emphasized the U.S.’ support for Israel and urged groups and countries not to widen the conflict. Meanwhile, Israel continues its offensive aimed at destroying Hamas infrastructure and minimizing civilian casualties.
