Valdez Throws No-Hitter in Astros’ Victory over Cleveland Guardians

Valdez Throws No-Hitter to Lead the Astros to Victory

Houston, TX – In a much-needed turnaround for the Houston Astros, Framber Valdez delivered an exceptional performance on Tuesday, pitching a no-hitter to secure a 2-0 win against the Cleveland Guardians at Minute Maid Park. Valdez faced all 27 batters, striking out seven and tallying a total of 93 pitches. His impressive display marked the 16th no-hitter in Astros history and the first solo no-hitter since Justin Verlander achieved the feat in 2019.

Earlier in the day, the Astros had reacquired Verlander from the New York Mets, making Valdez’s no-hitter even more special. Last season, the team managed two combined no-hitters, including one during the World Series. However, Valdez’s accomplishment as a left-handed pitcher made history for the Astros organization.

On the other hand, the Cleveland Guardians have now been no-hit 15 times, including five occasions since the start of the 2021 season. Their last no-hitter dates back to 1981, making it the longest drought in the league.

Cleveland manager Terry Francona praised Valdez’s performance, acknowledging the difficulty of facing a talented Astros lineup. Francona said, “I thought the ball came out of his hands about as good as we’ve seen… The way that guy was throwing, that’s the ball game.”

Valdez started the game strong, retiring the first 12 batters and striking out half of them. He did walk a batter in the fifth inning but managed to escape unscathed thanks to a timely double-play. Valdez sealed the deal in the ninth inning, inducing a groundout and coaxing a flyout and a pop-up to complete the no-hitter.

The no-hitter was a significant turnaround for Valdez, who had struggled in his previous outing, allowing eight hits and six runs in just 3 2/3 innings against the Texas Rangers. However, with a 9-7 record and a 3.29 ERA this season, Valdez has proven himself as a reliable starting pitcher for the Astros. He was also named to his second consecutive All-Star team.

Valdez’s no-hitter is the third of the season in Major League Baseball. The Detroit Tigers’ Matt Manning and the New York Yankees’ Domingo Germán achieved a combined no-hitter and a perfect game, respectively. As for the Astros, they have won three of their last four games and currently hold a 61-47 record, sitting just half a game behind the Rangers in the AL West.

With the addition of Verlander to their roster and Valdez’s impressive performance, the Astros are poised to make a strong push for another trip to the World Series. It would be their fifth appearance in seven years and an incredible accomplishment for the team. The future looks bright for the Astros as they continue their title defense this summer.
