THOOTHUKUDI, India — Vietnamese automaker VinFast has launched production at its new electric vehicle factory in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant move in its ambitious $2 billion investment plan in India. The facility, with an initial capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, is designed to scale up to 150,000 annually and aims to serve as a key export hub for the region.
Located near a major port, the factory is expected to create over 3,000 jobs and establish Tamil Nadu as a pivotal center for electric vehicle manufacturing. Indian officials have lauded the investment, emphasizing the state’s strong industrial base, skilled workforce, and robust supply chains as attractive factors for VinFast’s decision.
Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister, T.R.B. Raaja, highlighted the potential for this venture to spur the development of a new industrial cluster in southern Tamil Nadu. He remarked that promoting more such clusters is crucial for India’s goal of becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse.
VinFast’s regional CEO, Pham Sanh Chau, expressed confidence in the factory’s ability to serve as a platform for future exports. The company is actively exploring opportunities in various sectors within India, following an invitation from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to broaden its investments in green energy, smart urban initiatives, and tourism.
VinFast’s decision to establish a presence in India signals a strategic pivot toward Asian markets after facing challenges in the U.S. and Europe. The company is also expanding its footprint with new assembly plants in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, reflecting a broader focus on leveraging Asia’s growing automotive landscape.
With a population that opens the door to substantial electric vehicle potential, India ranks as the third-largest car market globally. Although the market for four-wheel electric vehicles has traditionally been modest, recent growth has been notable, with sales surging significantly and government projections indicating a goal of 30% electric vehicle adoption by 2030.
VinFast plans to introduce its VF6 and VF7 SUV models tailored for Indian consumers later this year, aiming to position itself competitively within the electric vehicle segment. Comparatively, the company faces an uphill battle in a market populous with established players like Tata Motors and Mahindra, who dominate the more affordable vehicle segments.
The Indian electric vehicle landscape has primarily been shaped by domestic manufacturers, but various Chinese companies have struggled to gain traction due to geopolitical tensions and regulatory hurdles. Unlike its larger rivals, VinFast may avoid similar pitfalls, capitalizing on local production incentives including tax breaks to stimulate domestic manufacturing while potentially addressing the preferences of cost-sensitive Indian consumers.
Observing the competitive environment, analysts suggest that VinFast will need to prioritize affordability and reliable service to gain trust among consumers. The company is planning a comprehensive service presence across India, including showrooms and repair centers, further enhancing its local engagement.
With VinFast committing to local manufacturing, scaling operations will be critical. The company has outlined plans to establish a network of 32 dealerships across 27 cities, a significant expansion compared to rivals such as Hyundai, which boasts over 1,300 outlets. As VinFast navigates this challenging terrain, success hinges on its ability to establish a solid relationship with customers and offer competitive pricing.
Experts highlight that while market entry can be daunting, a focus on quality and affordability may enable VinFast to carve out a niche in this evolving landscape. Building brand recognition in India will require time and strategic marketing efforts that resonate with local consumers.
