Virginia Inmate Escapes as Guards Sleep: Investigation Reveals

RICHMOND, VA – Two correctional officers from the Virginia Department of Corrections have reportedly confessed to sleeping on duty, allowing a prisoner to escape from a hospital in August, according to an internal investigation. The prisoner, Naseem Isaiah Roulack, remains at large.

Roulack, 21, was serving a 13-year sentence for aggravated malicious wounding, grand larceny, and hit-and-run. The investigation revealed that during his hospital visit, Roulack’s metal restraints were replaced with nylon “flex cuffs” for an MRI procedure. However, the metal cuffs were never reinstated, providing an opportunity for his escape.

The escape occurred before dawn on August 12. Since then, Roulack has been implicated in a carjacking and kidnapping incident in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. The U.S. Marshals Service has labeled Roulack as “armed and dangerous.”

In an attempt to expedite his capture, state and federal authorities are offering a combined reward of $20,000. Meanwhile, the correctional officers who confessed to sleeping on duty have resigned from their positions.

Chadwick Dotson, Director of the Virginia Department of Corrections, expressed gratitude towards the Special Investigations Unit for their comprehensive investigation into Roulack’s escape. He assured that the department will use the findings to improve their incarceration procedures, aiming to enhance public safety across the Commonwealth.
