Bentonville, Arkansas — Walmart has removed certain apparel from its online store following backlash from customers who claimed a graphic on the clothing resembled a Nazi salute. The items in question, including a shirt and hoodie available in gray and black, featured the phrase “Paper Beats Rock,” referencing the popular children’s game.
Criticism arose after shoppers pointed out that the graphic included an outstretched palm, meant to symbolize “paper,” that bore a striking resemblance to a fascist salute. The palm image was juxtaposed with a raised fist, representing “rock.” In response to the uproar, Walmart quickly took both items down from its platform.
A company spokesperson released a statement emphasizing Walmart’s commitment to maintaining a respectful environment for its customers. They clarified that the apparel was listed by a third-party seller and violated the retailer’s policy against offensive products. “When issues like this are identified, we act immediately to remove them and strengthen our systems to prevent recurrence,” the spokesperson stated.
Walmart’s prohibited products policy explicitly includes items that promote hatred, intolerance, or mistreatment based on various characteristics, including race and religion. This incident has sparked extensive dialogue on social media, with many users expressing their disbelief at the design’s approval. Comments ranged from outright shock to opinions that the outrage was overblown, with some suggesting the graphic was not intended to be harmful.
“I was rolling my eyes thinking how could rock paper scissors be racist, then saw the shirt, wow, who in their right mind approved that design?” one commenter wrote, reflecting the sentiments of many. Meanwhile, some defended the design, with one user stating it was simply “a pretty funny shirt.”
This is not the first time Walmart has navigated controversy over its clothing designs. Earlier in 2023, the retailer removed a pro-recycling T-shirt after customers discovered that it contained an unintended swear word hidden in its message.
As public discourse around the boundaries of humor and insensitivity continues to evolve, Walmart’s swift action in this situation signifies an ongoing commitment to avoiding potential pitfalls and maintaining consumer trust.
