MANILA, Philippines — In a significant move amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, the United States has dispatched two warships to a contested shoal where a recent maritime incident involving Chinese and Philippine vessels raised serious concerns about safety in the region.

The USS Higgins, a guided missile destroyer, and USS Cincinnati, a littoral combat ship, were observed operating approximately 30 nautical miles from Scarborough Shoal, an area claimed by both China and the Philippines. According to Philippine Coast Guard Commodore Jay Tarriela, the ships were monitored by a Chinese naval vessel, but no incidents were reported during their operations.

The U.S. Navy has long conducted freedom-of-navigation patrols in the South China Sea to challenge China’s expansive claims over almost all of the waters, which have led to heightened military encounters. The deployment of American warships follows a statement from U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson, who condemned China’s recent actions against a Philippine vessel as reckless. The aftermath of the collision revealed significant damage to both Chinese ships, prompting criticism from neighboring countries. Japan, Australia, and New Zealand expressed their concern over the dangerous maneuvers of the Chinese vessels, emphasizing the need for restraint and adherence to international maritime laws.

Japanese Ambassador to Manila Endo Kazuya publicly denounced actions that heighten tensions in the area, while the Australian Embassy stressed the importance of de-escalation. On Wednesday, tensions escalated further when a Chinese fighter jet performed dangerous maneuvers, flying perilously close to a Philippine surveillance aircraft. The Philippine Coast Guard reported that this incident also occurred as they were monitoring activities over Scarborough Shoal.
