Watch Live: NASA Astronauts Conduct Historic Fourth All-Female Spacewalk

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Two NASA astronauts are set to make history as they conduct the fourth ever all-female spacewalk on Wednesday. Loral O’Hara and Jasmin Moghbeli will step outside the International Space Station (ISS) to perform various tasks during a spacewalk expected to last about seven hours.

The mission, which is scheduled for 8:05 a.m. EDT, will be broadcast live on Space.com and NASA’s official YouTube channel. The coverage will start at 6:30 a.m. EDT, providing early access to viewers.

During the spacewalk, O’Hara and Moghbeli will remove an electronics box called the Radio Frequency Group and replace one of the station’s trundle bearing assemblies. The bearings are essential for the solar arrays to track the sun.

The spacewalk was originally planned for October 20 but was delayed due to a coolant leak on Russia’s Nauka module. The leak was discovered on October 9 and two cosmonauts conducted a spacewalk on October 25 to investigate the cause and perform necessary tasks.

This will be the fourth all-female spacewalk in history, following the footsteps of NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, who performed the previous three in 2019 and 2020. NASA officials have emphasized that all-female spacewalks will continue beyond this mission.

The milestone spacewalk demonstrates the progress that has been made in gender equality in space exploration. It highlights the significant contributions that female astronauts are making to scientific research and space missions.
