Provo, Utah — Shares of Novo Nordisk jumped over 5% on Friday, buoyed by encouraging early prescription data following the U.S. launch of its groundbreaking oral obesity drug, Wegovy. The initial figures represent a potentially positive opening for the first-ever GLP-1 weight-loss pill, elevating the company’s prospects in the competitive obesity treatment market.
In a detailed analysis, analysts from TD Cowen characterized the early numbers as a “solid start,” acknowledging that while promising, one data point is insufficient to establish a long-term trend. The Wegovy pill was officially made available on January 5, having received regulatory approval in late December. Investors remain keenly aware that additional data is needed to gauge early consumer interest more accurately.
Novo Nordisk is looking to regain market share from its fierce competitor, Eli Lilly, which has increasingly dominated the obesity and diabetes drug sectors. The Danish pharmaceutical firm is also closely watching Eli Lilly’s upcoming oral weight-loss medication, as it seeks to maintain momentum in this fast-evolving market landscape.
Data released by Leerink Partners on Friday indicated that approximately 3,100 Wegovy prescriptions were filled during the drug’s initial week. In contrast, Eli Lilly’s obesity injection, Zepbound, garnered around 1,300 prescriptions in its first week and rose to about 8,000 in the following week after its late 2023 approval.
TD Cowen’s analysis shared different prescription statistics sourced from Symphony through Bloomberg, suggesting that about 4,290 prescriptions were filled for Wegovy during its first full week. They noted that this number likely excludes prescriptions from Novo Nordisk’s direct-to-consumer pharmacy and telehealth services, indicating a broader potential for uptake.
In comparison, Zepbound saw nearly 1,900 prescriptions filled during its first full week. If Symphony’s data holds true, Wegovy’s early performance surpasses that of Zepbound at a similar stage in its launch, according to TD Cowen analyst Michael Nedelcovych. However, a more thorough assessment is anticipated as more comprehensive data becomes available in the coming weeks.
Market dynamics may shift further once Eli Lilly launches its own oral drug, orforglipron, in the next few months. While Wegovy has established a lead, it is essential to note that it is a peptide medication that comes with dietary restrictions—users must refrain from consuming food or drink for 30 minutes after taking the pill with water. In contrast, Eli Lilly’s product is a small molecule drug, devoid of such limitations, which could influence patient preference and access.
Analysts are closely monitoring consumer responses and prescription patterns to determine the long-term viability of these medications. The evolving landscape of obesity pharmacotherapy is not just reshaping market shares; it is also highlighting the varied approaches companies are taking to address this critical public health issue.
