San Antonio, Texas — Victor Wembanyama, the star center for the San Antonio Spurs, has avoided serious injury following a hyperextension of his left knee during a recent game. An MRI conducted Thursday confirmed that Wembanyama did not sustain any ligament damage, easing concerns among fans and team officials alike.
Wembanyama, who played a pivotal role in the Spurs’ win over the New York Knicks Wednesday night, did not travel with the team for their upcoming match against the Indiana Pacers. Team officials opted to keep him in San Antonio to benefit from the advanced treatment programs available at Victory Capital Performance Center. As a result, he has been officially ruled out for Friday’s contest.
Sources indicate that Wembanyama’s status for Saturday’s home game against the Portland Trail Blazers remains uncertain. He is currently listed as questionable and is considered day-to-day as he manages soreness in his left knee.
The injury occurred with just over ten minutes remaining in the match against the Knicks. Wembanyama, while competing for a rebound against Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson, landed awkwardly and immediately grasped his knee. Although he received assistance back to his feet from teammate Stephon Castle and limped to the locker room, he was able to make his way off the court under his own power.
In a show of resilience, Wembanyama reassured fans as he departed, exclaiming, “I’ll be all right.” He returned to the bench for the final moments of the game, dressed in team warmups, displaying his determination to participate despite the setback. He concluded the game with an impressive stat line of 31 points and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play.
After the game, Wembanyama addressed the injury, stating, “It was just a hyperextension, so it should be minimal. I was confident. I was this close to coming back in the game. [They] had to hold me back.” His optimism reflects his eagerness to continue contributing to his team’s success.
Earlier this season, Wembanyama faced another challenge when he missed 12 games due to a left calf strain. He made his return to the lineup on December 13 during the semifinal round of the NBA Cup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, initially coming off the bench before making his first start on December 27.
Currently leading the Spurs in key statistical categories, Wembanyama averages 24.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game, underscoring his vital role in the team’s performance this season. As the Spurs navigate the season, his health and continued dominance on the court will be crucial in determining their success.
