West Virginia man beats and strangles his pregnant girlfriend until she stops breathing

OAK HILL, WV – A West Virginia man faces serious charges after authorities allege he brutally assaulted his pregnant girlfriend, left her forsaken in the woods and then called 911 to report the crime.

Logan Mark Willis, 21, of Oak Hill, was apprehended Friday in Jackson County, charged with attempted murder, strangulation, and malicious assault, law enforcement officials said.

The sequence of events unfolded that day when Willis allegedly assaulted his girlfriend violently inside his vehicle before dragging her to a desolate area. In a shocking twist, he later called law enforcement from a nearby gas station, expressing concern that he may have killed her.

Despite Willis’s grim report, authorities discovered the woman alive but in critical condition. She remained in dire straits over the weekend, with law enforcement describing her injuries as consistent with a severe and potentially life-altering attack.

Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger detailed the discovery of the victim, noting deputies traced a trail of blood to find her. Despite Willis’s claim during the 911 call that she wasn’t breathing, deputies confirmed she was still alive, albeit with signs of strangulation.

During the call, Willis had his and the victim’s other child with him, authorities noted. His alarming admission that he “beat her until she quit breathing” underscores the brutality of the alleged attack, Sheriff Mellinger said.

With the victim’s condition being paramount, concern also extends to her unborn child. Both the mother’s and baby’s recovery remain top priorities, according to officials.

Willis remains in custody at the South Central Regional Jail, located near Charleston, with his bail set at $500,000. The case continues to unfold as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this harrowing incident.
