SALT LAKE CITY — Kyle Whittingham is stepping down as head coach of the University of Utah football team after an impressive 21-season tenure that solidified his place as the program’s most successful leader. The announcement came following a strong 10-2 record this year, marking the Utes’ third season of 10 victories since 2020.

In a statement released on Friday, the 66-year-old Whittingham expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the program. “The time is right to step down from my position as the head football coach,” he stated. He reflected on the privilege of guiding numerous athletes on their journeys, saying, “It has been an honor to forge relationships with players and coaches who have worn the drum and feather throughout my time.”

Whittingham’s decision did not explicitly mention retirement, leading some to speculate about his potential interest in other football opportunities. With his departure, defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley is expected to be the front-runner for the head coaching position.

Under Whittingham’s leadership, the Utes accumulated a remarkable record of 177 wins and 88 losses, achieving a winning record in 18 of his 21 years. Notably, he led the team to eight seasons with 10 or more victories and claimed 11 bowl game victories during his tenure. Whittingham’s final game will be at the Las Vegas Bowl on December 31, wrapping up a career filled with notable achievements, including an undefeated season in 2008 that concluded with a victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
