For the first time in 50,000 years, a rare green comet is set to pass by Earth. The comet, known as C/2022 E3 (ZTF), is expected to be visible tonight, February 1.
The comet, which was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility, is expected to be the brightest green comet to pass by Earth in centuries. It is estimated to be a magnitude of +6.5, meaning it will be visible to the naked eye.
NASA scientists have advised that the best time to view the comet is just after sunset, when the sky is still relatively light. It will appear as a green streak in the sky, and will be visible for approximately 15 minutes.
For those who cannot view the comet from their location, there will be a live stream available online.
This is a rare opportunity to witness a celestial event of such magnitude, and one that will not be seen again for another 50,000 years.
