Woman charged with husband’s murder after shooting him amid financial dispute

LORIS, SC – A 63-year-old woman in Horry County faces a murder charge after allegedly fatally shooting her 64-year-old husband in an argument over finances. Laura Smith is accused of killing Michael Smith on May 12, confirmed Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

Michael Smith was found dead at his home in Loris with gunshot wounds to the torso. Authorities report the incident occurred around 8:55 p.m. local time. The Horry County Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting.

According to booking records, Laura Smith was detained at 2:29 a.m. on May 13 and is currently held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail. Police responding to the scene found a revolver next to Michael’s body after Laura informed them he was in the bedroom.

The arrest warrant detailed that Laura allegedly shot Michael twice following a verbal dispute about their finances. The tragic turn of events shocked neighbors, who had observed the couple riding a golf cart with their dog just hours before the shooting.

“It was totally unexpected,” said a neighbor who witnessed Laura’s arrest but chose to remain anonymous. “A dozen police cruisers arrived with flashing lights, and crime tape was put up around the house. You just don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.”

The neighbor shared that Laura often spoke highly of her husband. “Laura told me several times, ‘I’m glad my husband loves me so much.’ To have this happen is unbelievable,” they said.

As the investigation continues, the community remains in disbelief over the sudden and violent incident.
