Redmond, Washington — Microsoft has unveiled its latest innovation, the Xbox Ally, during the Xbox Games Showcase, marking a significant leap in the handheld gaming market. This handheld gaming device is designed to operate on a user-friendly version of Windows 11, catering specifically to the needs and preferences of gamers on the go.

The unveiling revealed two distinct models: the standard Xbox Ally and the more powerful Xbox Ally X. The Ally X features an advanced AMD handheld processor, the AI Z2 Extreme. In contrast, the base model runs on the Z2 A, which offers less processing power. One of the standout features of the Ally X is its exceptional built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU), boasting 50 TOPs of AI performance. This enhancement transforms the device into a powerful gaming experience, complementing Microsoft’s plans to integrate AI technologies, such as Copilot, into its gaming ecosystem.

Mirroring the capabilities of the Asus ROG Ally X, which debuted in July 2024, the Xbox Ally X comes equipped with a 1080p display, supporting a vibrant 120Hz refresh rate enhanced by Freesync Premium technology. While it remains uncertain if both devices utilize identical displays, the graphics performance promises to be impressive.

To enhance usability, Microsoft has adapted the Xbox app specifically for handheld devices. Upon launching, users will encounter a revamped version of the app that integrates seamlessly with various PC game libraries, including Steam and Epic Games. This redesign aims to create a central hub for users’ gaming needs, simplifying access to their favorite titles.

Although Microsoft has not disclosed specific release dates, the company hinted that both the Xbox Ally and the Ally X will arrive in time for the holiday season. While pricing has yet to be announced, early estimates suggest the Ally X could retail around $799, reflecting its high-end specifications.

The popularity of handheld gaming PCs has surged since the introduction of the Steam Deck in 2022, prompting intense competition among manufacturers. Challenges persist, however, as the complexity of Windows can hinder user experience on handhelds. Companies like Lenovo and Asus are exploring solutions to enhance usability, with Lenovo even opting to license SteamOS for its latest devices.
