Yellowstone Biscuit Basin Explosion Caught on Camera – Exclusive Footage!

Yellowstone National Park, located in the state of Wyoming, experienced a small hydrothermal explosion in the Biscuit Basin thermal area on July 23, 2024. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the incident that occurred around 10 a.m., approximately 2.1 miles northwest of the famous Old Faithful geyser. Despite the explosion near the Black Diamond Pool, no injuries were reported. Visitors captured videos of the event, showing individuals in close proximity to the explosion which resulted in damage to the boardwalk.

Following the explosion, Yellowstone National Park officials closed off access to Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, for safety reasons until further notice. While the full extent of the damage is still unknown, park authorities are working to assess the situation. The Grand Loop road remains open, with USGS and YNP staff monitoring conditions to determine when it is safe to reopen the area.

According to a joint release by USGS and YNP, hydrothermal explosions are not uncommon in Yellowstone National Park. These events occur when water beneath the surface quickly turns into steam, causing explosive reactions. Despite the recent explosion at Biscuit Basin, monitoring data show no significant changes in the Yellowstone region’s volcanic activity, which remains at normal background levels.

The release also emphasized that such hydrothermal explosions, like the one in Biscuit Basin, are not indicative of imminent volcanic eruptions. They are distinct events and are not caused by magma rising to the surface. More information regarding hydrothermal explosions in Yellowstone National Park can be found on the USGS website.

As investigations continue and more details become available, USGS plans to release additional information to keep the public informed. Visitors are advised to adhere to safety precautions and stay updated on developments related to the incident. The park authorities remain vigilant in ensuring the overall safety and well-being of all individuals within the park premises.
