20-year-old man gunned down in car in Virginia was targeted and hunted by 23-year-old shooter

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A North Carolina man faces murder charges following the car-to-car shooting death of a young passenger along a Virginia road in July 2023. Jahil Arman Martin, 23, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 20-year-old Nyjeon Dameae Brandon.

Martinsville Police Chief Rob Fincher, addressing the media on Tuesday, described the incident as a calculating execution, emphasizing that the attack was both premeditated and intended specifically for Brandon. “This was a planned, premeditated murder, and the victim was the intended target,” said Fincher.

The fatal encounter occurred early on the morning of July 9, 2023, as Brandon traveled on Commonwealth Boulevard in southwest Virginia. According to law enforcement, the gunfire resulted in Brandon’s death at a local hospital and injuries to at least two other occupants in the vehicle.

Stalling initially, the investigation suffered from uncooperative witnesses, who reportedly attempted to obscure crucial evidence. Despite these setbacks, after over a year of detective work, authorities made the breakthrough with Martin’s arrest, linking him to Brandon through a prior acquaintance.

Traffic camera footage played an instrumental role in unraveling the case. Chief Fincher suggests that Martin’s arrest is not the end of the investigation, implying that more individuals could face charges. “We are continuing our efforts in the investigation, and there are likely to be additional arrests,” he stated.

Brandon, a graduate of John Motley Morehead High School, is remembered as a compassionate soul, fortunate to have a family and community that cherished him.

His obituary reflects a young man whose kindness was as notable as his love for sports, particularly football and basketball. It also highlighted his close ties with his family and his impact on those around him.

Currently, Martin is detained in a North Carolina jail as he awaits extradition to Virginia. Authorities remain committed to holding all involved accountable, continuing their pursuit of justice for Brandon.
