APPLETON, WI – A somber scene unfolded in Appleton over the weekend as authorities responded to a fatal incident involving a father and son. On Sunday morning, 74-year-old Daniel Juedes Sr. lost his life following a violent disturbance at his residence.
The unfolding tragedy led to the arrest of Gregory Juedes, 45, the son of the victim. He is currently held in the Outagamie County Jail, facing charges of first-degree intentional homicide, evading police, and resisting arrest.
The incident came to light when Appleton police received reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of S. Sanders Street at approximately 7:30 a.m. Responding officers found Juedes Sr. with critical gunshot wounds. Efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead at the scene.
In an effort to determine the cause of death definitively, an autopsy was conducted at the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday. Meanwhile, investigators continue to search for a motive behind the incident, which has left the community shaken.
According to Lt. Meghan Cash of the Appleton Police Department, the investigation is ongoing as they attempt to unravel the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event. “We’re working diligently to ensure we understand the full scope of the situation, given the serious nature of the crimes,” she said.
After the shooting, Gregory Juedes attempted to flee but was apprehended near Highway J and Interstate 41 following a brief pursuit. This arrest marks the first known interaction between law enforcement and the Juedes family at this address, as there were no prior recorded incidents involving them.
The gravity of the situation is underscored by the fact that the police had no prior contact with either the victim or the suspect, highlighting the unexpected nature of the crime. As investigators work through the details, Lt. Cash emphasized the importance of understanding how to best support the family during this time.
As of now, no formal charges have been brought against Juedes, who is scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday. Authorities urge anyone with information about the Juedes case to reach out to the Appleton Police Department, stressing the community’s role in aiding the investigation.
