Five Memphis police officers have been fired following the death of Tyre Nichols, a man who was hospitalized after his arrest.
The news comes after a call from Councilman Edmund Ford Jr. to release the video of Nichols’ arrest. Ford Jr. said, “We must hold police officers accountable for their actions. They are not above the law.”
The five officers were fired after an investigation into the death of Nichols, which was confirmed by the Memphis Police Department (MPD).
The Nichols family, accompanied by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, will address the public on Monday. Crump has been involved in several high-profile cases, including the death of George Floyd.
The Nichols family has yet to comment on the firing of the five officers, but it is likely that they will address the issue on Monday. It is unclear whether the family will be seeking justice for their son’s death.
