Astronomers have discovered an exciting new exoplanet outside our solar system, and it’s been dubbed the ‘forbidden planet’.
The planet, located in the constellation of Pictor, is orbiting a small star that is only 4 times its size. This is unusual as typically, planets of this size orbit stars that are much larger.
What’s even more remarkable is that the planet is estimated to be around five times the size of Earth, which would make it a gas giant. This is surprising as gas giants usually form around stars that are much larger than the star this planet is orbiting.
This discovery could have implications for our understanding of how planets form, and could lead to further breakthroughs in the field of astronomy.
The ‘forbidden planet’ is the latest in a series of exciting discoveries outside our solar system, and is sure to be a topic of much debate amongst astronomers.
