Brooklyn man fights masked man who tries to snatch his 6-year-old son on the street

NEW YORK, NY – A shocking incident unfolded in Brooklyn when a masked man allegedly attempted to abduct a 6-year-old boy in broad daylight. The unsettling moment was captured by surveillance footage released by a local community patrol group and quickly made rounds on social media.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Stephan Stowe, was apprehended on Sunday. Stowe faces charges of second-degree kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, and harassment. The incident, which took place on Saturday, was shared globally through a coordinated effort between the Crown Heights Shomrim Patrol and the New York Police Department’s 71st Precinct.

“This deeply concerning incident took place in the heart of Crown Heights,” stated the patrol group on social media, lauding the father for his swift response during the alarming situation.

Surveillance imagery shows the father walking with his son and another child near Kingston Avenue. Stowe is seen approaching the group, allegedly attempting to seize the boy. The father’s quick reflexes allowed him to retrieve his son and fend off the attacker before swiftly leaving the scene, authorities confirmed.

Stowe’s criminal history includes over 30 prior arrests, with records indicating criminal possession of a weapon among the charges. The motive behind the attempted kidnapping remains unclear, leaving residents on edge, particularly within the Orthodox Jewish community, which has recently experienced a surge in violent incidents.

The Jerusalem Post reported several attacks targeting the Crown Heights Orthodox Jewish population over recent weeks. In one instance, a Jewish man received 18 stitches after being slashed across the face by an assailant shouting antisemitic slurs. Concurrently, reports from Amsterdam indicated “antisemitic hit-and-run squads” attacking Israeli soccer fans, sparking outrage amongst officials in the Netherlands.

Community figure Yaacov Behrman expressed concern online about the alarming frequency of these occurrences, highlighting that many perpetrators have utilized masks to evade identification. Behrman emphasized the community’s relief over Stowe’s arrest, attributing it to the crucial footage acquired by Shomrim and the NYPD’s efforts.

The Anti-Defamation League has initiated inquiries into this latest incident and is collaborating with law enforcement to gain further insights. They described the footage as “disturbing” and are working to ensure justice and safety for the community.

Contacted for comment, Behrman relayed the father’s appreciation towards law enforcement for their prompt action and reassured that his children were unharmed and safe. The incident underscores the need for continued vigilance amid escalating tensions and acts of violence in the area.
