Colombian Immigrant Slain in String of Aurora Crimes; Killer Sentenced to 85 Years

Aurora, Colo. – An Arapahoe County judge sentenced Andrew Jacobs to 85 years in the Department of Corrections for his involvement in a series of crimes in 2021 that resulted in the death of Carlos Albarracin in Aurora. Jacobs pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, and three violent crime sentence enhancers, and 60 other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. He received a 48-year sentence for the second-degree murder charge and 18 years for one robbery charge, and 19 years for the other, totaling 85 years. Jacobs was given credit for the 735 days he had already spent in jail.

The series of crimes included the shooting and killing of Carlos Albarracin at the Florida Station Apartments on November 10, 2021. Albarracin, who had recently immigrated to the United States from Colombia with his family, was sitting in his pickup truck with his then 6-year-old son when Jacobs shot him.

The family’s statement expressed the profound impact of Albarracin’s murder, emphasizing that he had moved to the United States to provide a better life and future for his family. The pain of his loss and the absence of his love, support, and protection for his son were deeply felt. The family also expressed empathy for the family of Andrew Jacobs, acknowledging the absence they would also experience due to his actions.

Unfortunately, Albarracin’s murder was part of an hour-long string of crimes that included seven other carjackings and two home invasions. Jacobs was apprehended after crashing two stolen cars about an hour after the crimes began, sustaining serious injuries in the crashes. According to an arrest affidavit, Jacobs admitted to being “high” and not recalling the events of the previous day when questioned by a detective at the hospital. When informed of his suspicion of first-degree murder, Jacobs expressed no recollection of the day before at all.

The egregious and tragic nature of the series of events and the impact on Albarracin’s family reflects the severity of the sentence handed down to Jacobs. This devastating loss underscores the potential ripple effects of senseless acts of violence on the victims and their loved ones.
