Rep. Safety Threats Plaguing US Congresswoman Following Attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Minnesota Representative Angie Craig spoke out about her injuries and ongoing recovery following a February assault in her apartment building. This week, she detailed the incident in a victim impact statement filed by prosecutors ahead of the sentencing of Kendrid Hamlin in federal court in Washington. Hamlin had pleaded guilty to the assault in June.

According to a police report, the altercation began when Craig encountered a man acting erratically in her building, leading to an assault in the elevator. In her statement, Craig described being physically attacked and trapped inside the elevator, with the assailant attempting to pull her back as the doors opened. She also revealed that she was left with periodic anxiety and her sense of safety and security had been significantly impacted by the incident.

The attack left Craig with physical injuries, including bruising, a cut to her lip, and several days of soreness and discomfort. Additionally, the disclosure of her apartment address by a media outlet forced her to break her lease due to security concerns, as she also received targeted physical violence and death threats in the aftermath of the assault.

In her statement, Craig expressed her hope for Hamlin to receive mental health and addiction treatment while incarcerated, as she believes he would continue to be a threat to others without it. Meanwhile, a lawyer for Hamlin did not respond to requests for comment.

The assault had a profound impact not only on Craig but also on her family, as her wife and four sons were also shaken by the incident. Despite feeling fortunate to have escaped with relatively minor physical harm, Craig emphasized the lasting mental and emotional effects of the attack.

Overall, the incident sheds light on the broader consequences of such assaults and the need for continued support for survivors and resources for perpetrators to receive appropriate treatment. As the legal process moves forward, the hope is that necessary measures will be taken to address the long-term impact of such traumatic events.
