Cortez Community Mourns Loss of Hero Sergeant in Line of Duty

CORTEZ, CO – A shootout on Wednesday has taken a heartbreaking turn as Cortez Police Sergeant Michael Moran, 46, was killed in the line of duty following a routine traffic stop that escalated to gunfire.

The incident began at approximately 11:25 a.m. along South Broadway when Moran initiated a stop. The situation rapidly deteriorated when the suspects opened fire on Moran before fleeing. Authorities managed to track down the suspects to a location on Highway 160-491 where gunfire was again exchanged.

One suspect died at the scene, while a second was apprehended. Tragically, Sergeant Moran succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Southwest Memorial Hospital.

Sergeant Moran, a prior Marine with 9 years of active service, including two tours in Iraq, had been a member of the Cortez Police Department since 2012. In his tenure, Moran was recognized for his rapid climb through the ranks, eventually becoming a beloved K-9 handler with his partner Otto until the dog’s retirement in 2020. The department and the community remember him for his commitment and characteristic humor. He is survived by two daughters, alongside numerous colleagues, friends, and relatives.

In a somber gesture, flags have been lowered to half-staff around the community in mourning and respect for the fallen officer.

Governor Jared Polis expressed deep sympathy over the loss, stating, “I am saddened to hear of the tragic passing of the Cortez Police Officer in the line of duty. My thoughts and prayers are with their family, as well as the Cortez Police Department and the community during this difficult time. This officer dedicated their career to serving and protecting their community.”
