DALLAS, TX – A family dispute turned deadly in southwest Dallas this week, as a 28-year-old woman lost her life following an argument with her mother over an alcoholic beverage, authorities said.
Tabatha Jones, the victim, was reportedly shot inside her home on Green Cove Lane Monday afternoon. First responders arrived to find Jones gravely wounded after receiving reports of a shooting just before 4 p.m. Despite efforts to save her, she died later at a nearby hospital.
According to Dallas police, Jones managed to call 911 herself, identifying her mother as the shooter and explaining that she had been shot in the side. Officers responding to the emergency found her alone in the residence with her mother, Shanika Battle, 49.
Investigators revealed that the altercation between the two women escalated from a disagreement over who had consumed whose alcoholic drink. Court records stated that the two were the only people at home at the time.
A search of the residence led police to discover a pistol in the living room near Battle’s purse and a spent .380-caliber shell casing outside Jones’ bedroom. Authorities said Battle admitted to owning the firearm.
During an interview, Battle explained that the dispute intensified when her daughter confronted her about drinking the wrong alcohol and began entering rooms that were not hers. The situation turned heated, culminating in the fatal shooting.
While there is some uncertainty over how physical the confrontation became, police documents indicate that Battle maintained she never intended to shoot her daughter and claimed she only took out the gun to frighten her.
Neighbors expressed shock as word spread about the tragic outcome for 28-year-old Jones, who lived in the area with her mother. Police noted that they were able to respond quickly to the shooting, as officers had already been on a separate call just a block away.
Battle was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being held in Dallas County Jail. She faces a murder charge and has not been given an option for bail.
The case remains under investigation as authorities work to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the tragic loss of Tabatha Jones’ life.
