MOMENCE, IL – The quiet of a Monday morning in this small Kankakee County community was shattered when local bar owner Courtney Drysdale was found shot to death at her business, The Line, just blocks from the Illinois-Indiana border.
Authorities say Drysdale, 30, was preparing to open her bar around 11 a.m. when a gunman confronted her, demanded money from the cash register, and then shot her twice before fleeing. Despite her reported compliance with the robber’s demands, investigators allege she was killed in what they described as an execution-style attack.
The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office launched a swift investigation, sharing surveillance images of the suspect shortly after the fatal shooting. The release of those images, officials said, led to a flurry of public tips that helped steer investigators toward the man they now believe is responsible.
The man arrested in the case, identified as 47-year-old Julius Burkes Jr., was taken into custody Tuesday outside his Hammond, Indiana, residence. Law enforcement officials reported that after fleeing the scene, the suspect attempted to disable what he thought was a surveillance camera, but crucial video evidence was nonetheless recovered.
Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey detailed the case at a press conference just before the arrest, saying the suspect’s attempt to tamper with security equipment ultimately failed. When questioned about the motive, officials said robbery appeared to be the primary intent, though the nature of the attack has intensified concerns within the community.
Burkes is currently being held in Indiana and is awaiting extradition to Illinois. Once transferred, he is expected to face formal charges related to murder and armed robbery.
The violent death of Drysdale has left a palpable sense of loss among family, friends, and patrons in the tight-knit town of Momence. Colleagues describe her as a dedicated owner who started her career as a bartender at The Line, eventually purchasing the establishment she loved. She leaves behind a fiancé and a young daughter.
On social media, The Line announced its closure until further notice, citing the tragedy that has struck its staff and regular clientele. Community members have shared condolences and memories online, with many expressing shock at the sudden and senseless violence.
Authorities credit the rapid spread of surveillance images and multiple community tips for leading to a quick arrest in the case. Meanwhile, local officials have reassured residents that they are doing everything possible to seek justice for Drysdale and provide support to her family.
The ongoing investigation continues as Kankakee County works with Indiana authorities to ensure the suspect stands trial in Illinois. Law enforcement has not indicated whether additional suspects were involved.
