Distraught Family Seeks Justice After Brother Shot Dead in Alleged Robbery

Diepkloof Zone 2, South Africa – The Mathonsi family is in mourning after the tragic death of their brother, Rhulani Mathonsi, who was shot and killed during an alleged robbery on the evening of October 11. According to his sister, Tsakani Mathonsi, the family was inside their home when they heard gunshots coming from outside their brother’s yard where he operated his slap-chips business. Chaos ensued, and despite being intoxicated at the time, Rhulani was seen chasing after his attackers. A total of 11 bullet cartridges were found both inside and outside the yard.

Before pursuing his assailants, Rhulani made sure to inform his family of the incident. “He knocked on our backroom door, telling us that he had been shot in the hand by intruders who also stole his cellphone and cash from his business,” shared Tsakani. Thankfully, a bullet hit the window of the bedroom where Rhulani and his girlfriend slept, but neither were injured.

According to Tsakani, after the gunshots momentarily ceased, Rhulani bravely went after his attackers, demanding the return of his stolen belongings. Unfortunately, he was fatally shot four times in Orlando East, where the pursuit led him. Tsakani expressed her family’s devastation, emphasizing that they had desperately hoped for Rhulani’s safe return. “We are deeply saddened because his death could have been prevented. If only he hadn’t pursued the intruders, our story would be different. The only solace we can find is if those responsible are apprehended and justice is served.”

The day following this tragic incident, enraged residents of Diepkloof reportedly vandalized a house in Orlando East believed to belong to one of the suspects. The late Rhulani Mathonsi’s sister, Gladys, emphasized their strong desire for justice and for the killers to face legal consequences. Tsakani also expressed concern about the growing issue of gun violence in their community, stating, “It’s devastating when violence strikes so close to home. Losing our brother in such a manner was something we never imagined, and we wouldn’t wish it upon any family.”

According to the Mathonsi family, one suspect, whose house was vandalized, has since been arrested at the Orlando Police Station. The family continues to grieve the loss of their beloved brother and hopes that this tragic event will serve as a catalyst for addressing the escalating gun violence problem in their area.
