Jerusalem — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced significant military actions aimed at reshaping Gaza, following a decision by his security cabinet to pursue an extensive operation in the region. This move, characterized by some officials as a strategy to “conquer” Gaza, comes as tensions continue to escalate.
The cabinet’s decision on Sunday coincided with the Israeli military’s announcement to mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, enhancing its operational capacity in the densely populated Palestinian territory. The expanded military initiative, termed “Gideon’s Chariots,” reportedly has a primary goal of subduing Hamas forces and securing the release of hostages.
In a video message posted on social media, Netanyahu emphasized the new strategy, stating, “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward.” He emphasized the commitment to maintaining a strong military presence in the area.
Netanyahu also mentioned the planned movement of Gaza’s population as a protective measure. A senior Israeli security official indicated that the operation has been endorsed unanimously by the security cabinet and is intended to take place after U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the Middle East. This timing aims to provide a potential opportunity for negotiations regarding hostage releases.
If negotiations fail, the military operation will escalate fully, according to the official, who noted that the strategy includes relocating Gaza’s population toward the south while maintaining control over captured areas. The blockade of humanitarian aid could be modified afterward, depending on the situation.
As discussions around the military strategy unfold, right-wing Israeli officials have expressed aspirations to annex Gaza post-operation. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich indicated that once military operations succeed, discussions about sovereignty over Gaza could become viable. He stated, “Once we conquer and stay – we can talk about sovereignty.”
With the ongoing conflict, severe humanitarian consequences have been reported. Since March, more than 2,400 Palestinians have died due to escalating airstrikes, as the situation has deteriorated since the breakdown of a ceasefire that had lasted nearly two months. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported over 52,000 casualties since the onset of hostilities.
Gradual expansions of military operations are anticipated, aimed at allowing a window for renewed ceasefire efforts before Trump’s visit. However, as Israel seeks to establish a clearer military strategy, its blockade of humanitarian aid has persisted, raising significant concerns regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Reports indicate that discussions continue regarding a potential framework for aid delivery that circumvents Hamas control. U.S. and Israeli officials are exploring mechanisms that will ensure aid reaches the Gaza population without interference from militant groups. However, aid agencies have criticized this approach, stating it could further entrench control over essential resources.
As these complex dynamics unfold, both humanitarian needs and geopolitical strategies remain at the forefront of discussions about Gaza’s future, marking a critical juncture for Israeli-Palestinian relations. The situation remains fluid, with various actors closely monitoring developments and their implications for regional peace and stability.
