Bethlehem, West Bank — A former papal vehicle that once transported Pope Francis through the streets of Bethlehem is being repurposed as a mobile health clinic for children in the Gaza Strip. This initiative represents not only a tribute to one of the late pontiff’s final aspirations but also a vital lifeline for those impacted by ongoing conflict in the region.
Peter Brune, secretary general of Caritas Sweden, highlighted the significance of this project. He emphasized that the vehicle, often referred to as a “vehicle of hope,” sends a powerful message to children in Gaza about the possibility of peace and a brighter future, while also offering much-needed medical assistance. “It shows them that the world has not forgotten about them,” he stated.
Last year, Brune collaborated with Anton Asfar, his colleague at Caritas Jerusalem, to devise the plan for the transformed popemobile. Upon submitting the idea to Pope Francis, they received his enthusiastic endorsement. “He expressed his full support for this initiative,” Brune recalled.
The vehicle is currently being fitted with essential medical supplies, including equipment for diagnosing infections, suture kits, oxygen, and storage for medications. Its goal is to provide healthcare to children without access to medical services, bolstering the efforts of Caritas Jerusalem, which employs around 100 staff members working directly in Gaza. “This intervention is critical as the healthcare system there is on the verge of collapse,” Brune noted.
The announcement of the vehicle’s revival comes ahead of the conclave to select a new pope and reflects Francis’s enduring dedication to those trapped in conflict. He frequently condemned the violence that has plagued the region and lamented the suffering of children caught in the crossfire. “This is not war; this is cruelty,” he stated following a tragic airstrike that claimed the lives of several children in Gaza.
For over a year, the pope made nightly calls to Gaza’s sole Catholic church, offering moral support to congregants amidst the devastation. Brune mentioned that the situation for Christians in Gaza has become dire, with a reported 3% of the Christian population lost since the onset of hostilities.
Preparation for the popemobile’s transformation is progressing, and Brune indicated it could be ready within a week. Negotiations are underway to secure permission from Israeli authorities to transport the vehicle into Gaza.
The urgency of the situation in Gaza is profound, according to Brune. He criticized the current blockade that has restricted aid into the area since early March, making conditions increasingly desperate. “Months ago, children faced freezing temperatures, and now they are starving,” he explained.
Aid organizations have raised alarm over the humanitarian impact of the blockade, asserting that it has precipitated widespread malnutrition and suffering among civilians. Israeli officials maintain that the blockade is necessary to pressure Hamas to release remaining hostages.
UNICEF recently reported over 15,000 children killed and many others injured in the conflict, underscoring the alarming escalation of the humanitarian crisis since hostilities renewed in October 2023. The war began after a surprise attack by Hamas resulted in significant casualties and numerous hostages taken from Israel.
Brune voiced a strong call for humanitarian access, asserting that using civilians as pawns in conflict is a violation of ethical and humanitarian principles. He envisions the popemobile’s transformation as a model for future humanitarian efforts, inspiring similar initiatives in regions like Ukraine or Congo, where access to aid remains severely restricted. “This isn’t just about Gaza; it’s a broader message that humanitarian aid must find its way to those in need,” he said.
