Influential Guitarist and Songwriter Tom Verlaine Passes Away at 73

Legendary guitarist and songwriter Tom Verlaine has passed away at the age of 73. Verlaine was the frontman and guitarist of the influential punk-era band Television, whose sound was an integral part of the New York City punk scene of the 1970s.

Verlaine’s career spanned over five decades, during which he released several acclaimed solo albums and collaborated with a number of iconic musicians, including Patti Smith. Verlaine and Smith had a long-lasting relationship which began in 1974 and lasted for over a decade.

Verlaine was born in Denville, New Jersey, and moved to New York City in the early 1970s. He formed Television in 1973 with Richard Hell, Billy Ficca, and Richard Lloyd. The band released two albums, Marquee Moon and Adventure, which are widely regarded as classics of the genre.
