LOUISVILLE, KY – A man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend’s ex-husband during an unexpected encounter at a Louisville restaurant over the weekend, authorities said.
Officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department responded late Sunday to reports of gunfire at an eatery located in the 5200 block of New Cut Road, near Iroquois Park. Upon arrival, Louisville police found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg.
Emergency medical crews transported the wounded man to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he received treatment for injuries determined to be non-life-threatening.
Investigators in Louisville spoke with the victim at the hospital, where he identified the suspected shooter as “Carlos Garcia,” describing him as his ex-wife’s current boyfriend. Police were able to determine the suspect’s full identity as Carlos Garcia-Romero, 28, and confirmed that the victim and Garcia-Romero’s girlfriend have a child together.
According to initial accounts, the two men had no plans to meet but happened to run into each other while dining at the restaurant. The encounter escalated, leading to the shooting, police said.
Garcia-Romero was arrested and later booked on charges including two counts of second-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, discharging a firearm across a public road, unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, and fleeing or evading police in the first degree.
During questioning, Garcia-Romero allegedly admitted he had pointed a firearm at his girlfriend’s ex-husband in an attempt to intimidate him. He told investigators that the weapon discharged accidentally, with no intent to cause harm.
After the shooting, Garcia-Romero reportedly disposed of the firearm by throwing it into a dumpster at a nearby gas station, according to statements given to detectives.
Authorities placed Garcia-Romero in the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, where he remains held on a $50,000 bond. Jail records indicate he is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on August 12.
Police say the injured man is expected to recover, and there have been no additional reports of injuries connected to the incident. Law enforcement officials in Louisville have not disclosed further details regarding potential motives or the interactions between the individuals prior to the shooting, but continue to investigate.
No updates have been issued regarding the recovery of the firearm or additional evidence. The case remains under review as officials prepare for the upcoming court proceedings.
