Savannah man trying to stop wife from testifying against him during their divorce steals her SUV and runs over her

SAVANNAH, GA – A Savannah man faces a string of felony charges after authorities say he struck his wife multiple times with her own SUV, leaving her with severe injuries, before fleeing the scene on foot earlier this year.

Twan Maurice Byrd was indicted Wednesday by a Chatham County grand jury for the violent incident, which unfolded on February 3, according to court documents. Byrd allegedly took his wife’s Chevy Equinox and, during a heated altercation, used the vehicle to run her down repeatedly, including while she was on the curb near a local car wash.

Multiple witnesses told law enforcement officers they saw Byrd back over the victim before she managed to seek shelter inside the car wash. The indictment states that, even after she sought refuge, Byrd struck her again with the SUV, then abandoned both the vehicle and his wife as she lay with serious injuries.

Police responding to the scene found the woman bleeding profusely from her nose and mouth, her right leg broken and described as “seriously disfigured,” according to investigative reports. She was able to tell police that Byrd, her husband, was responsible for the attack before she was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In addition to allegations of striking her with the SUV, court documents accuse Byrd of physically assaulting his wife by strangling her and delivering blows to her face during the incident.

The indictment also accuses Byrd of attempting to interfere with pending divorce proceedings by offering his wife unlawful incentives in exchange for her silence, in what authorities have described as a bid to prevent her from testifying against him. Prosecutors further allege that Byrd engaged in a pattern of stalking, making threatening and harassing phone calls to her in the aftermath of the attack.

Byrd faces numerous charges, including hijacking a motor vehicle, criminal attempt to commit murder, kidnapping, influencing a witness, stalking, obstruction of an officer, and three counts of aggravated battery. He remains in custody at the Chatham County Jail without bond.

Court records indicate Byrd will appear before a judge for arraignment on October 1. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to prepare for the upcoming court proceedings.
