The Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team delivered an electrifying performance on Saturday night in College Park, upsetting the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers.
The Terps were led by senior guard Kevon Williams, who scored a career-high 27 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with two minutes left to give Maryland a five-point lead.
The Terps held on for a 79-75 victory, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Fans stormed the court to celebrate the win, the first for Maryland over a top-five team this season.
Purdue had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but a 3-pointer by Boilermakers guard Eric Hunter Jr. rimmed out.
The win was Maryland’s second straight over a top-five team, after the Terps defeated No. 5 Michigan State last week.
The Terps are now 18-7 on the season and have a chance to make a run at the Big Ten title.
The Boilermakers, meanwhile, have lost two straight and dropped to 19-6 on the year.
The loss could have serious implications for Purdue’s NCAA Tournament chances. The Boilermakers will have to win the Big Ten Tournament to punch their ticket to the Big Dance.
