INDEPENDENCE, MO – A weekend argument over a Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt ended in tragedy Friday night when a 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed, allegedly by a friend, as the two prepared for a casino outing.

Authorities have charged Trey Parker, 23, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action following the deadly altercation. The stabbing unfolded as a garage sale wrapped up at Parker’s residence, with the suspect, the victim, and the victim’s mother all present. As evening approached, another friend arrived, and the group made plans to visit a nearby casino.

Investigators say a dispute erupted between Parker and the victim while the rest of the group readied a vehicle. Witnesses reported that Parker and his friend began arguing outside, specifically about the Chiefs sweatshirt the victim was wearing. According to court documents, Parker claimed ownership of the sweatshirt, intensifying the confrontation.

As tensions escalated, a bystander recalled seeing the two men shoving each other in a neighboring parking lot. The situation quickly turned violent. The victim entered the car, clutching his side, and told his companions that he had been stabbed. At his urging, his mother and the other man rushed to find emergency medical assistance.

Police responded shortly after 8 p.m. to a car wash near South Crane and East 23rd streets, where paramedics had found the wounded man. First responders transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Statements from the victim’s mother indicated there was no one else near her son at the time who could have inflicted the injury. Parker’s mother recounted observing her son confronting the victim, who was wearing Parker’s red Chiefs hoodie and allegedly insulting him. She told authorities she did not witness the stabbing but later heard Parker admit he brandished a knife, insisting he did not think the wound was serious.

Surveillance video from the area gave police additional insight into the altercation. Footage reportedly showed Parker approaching the victim, waving an object in his right hand. He then suddenly lunged, lifted his arm, and stabbed the victim, who was seen immediately clutching his rib cage, according to detectives.

Parker was not taken into custody until Monday. During his interview with investigators, Parker claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging the victim had a knife and made threatening motions toward him. However, detectives presented video evidence that disputed this account. After being confronted with the footage, Parker reportedly retracted some details from his initial statement and acknowledged the victim may not have tried to strike him with a knife.

Jail records indicate Parker turned 23 a day after his arrest. He faced his first court appearance on Wednesday and is due for a bond review on September 30.

Police records link Parker to several previous arrests or convictions, including tampering with a vehicle, receiving stolen property, drug-related offenses, and unlawful possession of a firearm and drug paraphernalia. The investigation into Friday’s fatal stabbing remains active as authorities continue to review evidence and witness statements.
