CHEYENNE, Wyoming — Senator Cynthia Lummis expressed shock after learning during a recent FBI briefing that her communications had been monitored by the government. The briefing, led by FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, revealed that Lummis, along with several other Republican lawmakers, had been subjected to unauthorized surveillance.

Lummis recounted that she was unaware of any such actions taken against her and her colleagues, stating, “Everybody in the room was stunned.” The FBI identified a total of eight Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn, and Ron Johnson, along with Representative Mike Kelly, as having their phone records improperly accessed.

The senator criticized the surveillance as a blatant violation of constitutional rights. “It’s shocking that the FBI would assault our constitutional rights in that way,” she added, emphasizing her belief that the observation extended beyond the nine identified lawmakers. “It now appears that it was an ongoing practice of the Biden-led FBI to spy on Republican senators in their official capacities,” Lummis said.

Lummis revealed that the evidence of this surveillance came from a whistleblower within the agency who had uncovered a memo detailing the extent of the spying. She pointed out that without this whistleblower, the current FBI leadership may have remained unaware of these actions. The senator raised concerns over the implications of such surveillance, speculating about other potential misconduct that might still be hidden within the agency, particularly involving proprietary technology that could obscure evidence.

Chuck Grassley, the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, attended the briefing but was not among those targeted.
