LINCOLN, NE – A Nebraska couple is facing serious charges after their 4-month-old daughter died as a result of what authorities allege was abuse in the family home.

Ryan Greenwood, 36, and Tanya Greenwood, 28, have each been charged with child abuse resulting in death following a disturbing series of events that unfolded on August 14, according to local court filings. The investigation into the infant’s passing revealed details that have shocked the Lincoln community and prompted an outpouring of concern for child welfare.

Authorities say the case began to unfold after Tanya Greenwood arrived home to the sound of her baby’s cries, which she reportedly described to police as unlike anything she had ever heard before. Investigators allege that earlier in the evening, Ryan Greenwood had been “playing rough” with the infant while Tanya was away. According to statements made to police, Ryan admitted to conduct that led the child to cry uncontrollably before placing her in her crib with a bottle.

After leaving the child to sleep, the Greenwoods reported that she did not wake at her usual time the following morning. Investigation records indicate that Ryan told officials he checked on his daughter around 11 p.m. and believed her to be fine. However, by the next day, the baby was discovered unresponsive and cold to the touch.

Authorities say Ryan Greenwood attempted CPR before contacting Tanya and then dialing 911 for assistance. Despite efforts from emergency responders, the child was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s report concluded that the infant suffered a traumatic brain injury, with additional signs of abuse consistent with shaken baby syndrome. A pediatric specialist consulted in the case determined the nature of the injuries could not have resulted from an accident, and further suggested that getting medical help immediately could have improved the baby’s chances of survival.

As the investigation progressed, police learned of prior instances of concerning behavior. Tanya Greenwood is alleged to have witnessed Ryan shake the infant and, on another occasion, squeeze her leg forcefully, according to details shared with police. In the aftermath of her child’s death, Tanya’s online search history reportedly included inquiries about shaken baby syndrome.

Investigators allege that Tanya Greenwood considered taking the baby to the hospital for medical attention, but was discouraged by Ryan. Both parents were arrested last week, Ryan on August 26 and Tanya on August 28. Jail records show the couple is being held on $1.5 million bond each.

Court records indicate both Ryan and Tanya Greenwood are scheduled to appear before a judge on October 1. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review evidence and determine what additional steps may be necessary in the case.
