WYOMING, MI – A typically bustling Walmart on 54th Street turned into a scene of chaos on New Year’s Eve when gunfire erupted, leaving two injured, including an accidental victim—an 18-year-old shopper. The incident, occurring near the crowded checkouts around 6 p.m., prompted a swift evacuation of the store as local authorities investigated the brazen attack.
Shoppers described a sense of disbelief as shots rang out in what one witness characterized as a “terrifying” experience. Another witness, Torri Fry, recounted the shooting, reporting that two suspects had attempted to snatch something from a young man near the regular checkout lines before a chase ensued leading to the self-checkout area.
The two suspects, described as masked individuals, fired approximately ten shots amidst the melee. The police have yet to determine if the suspects and the young man knew each other or what might have precipitated the conflict. The shooting resulted in one young man, whose connection to the event is still under investigation, showing up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.
Another unintended victim, an 18-year-old woman, was struck in the foot while shopping. A witness, who chose to remain anonymous, reported using a belt as an improvised tourniquet to stem the bleeding. The woman recounted her efforts to stay with the victim and keep her calm during the frightening ordeal.
Authorities immediately ushered out customers and closed the retail giant for the night as they started their hunt for the perpetrators. They are seeking two individuals: one armed with a handgun sporting a black parka with fur around the collar, a red sweatshirt, and dark pants, and the other wearing light-colored pants and a black sweatshirt with white writing across the front.
