Philadelphia Journalist Josh Kruger Found Shot and Killed Inside His Home in Possible Domestic-Related Incident

Philadelphia, PA – A Philadelphia journalist was tragically shot and killed in his home in Point Breeze overnight, in what authorities suspect may be a domestic-related incident. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Watkins Street, prompting a swift response from police after reports of gunshots and screams. Josh Kruger, 39, was found outside his home with multiple gunshot wounds, where he later succumbed to his injuries at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore revealed that detectives believe an individual entered Kruger’s residence and shot him at the bottom of his stairs. Kruger managed to make his way outside, seeking assistance from neighbors. The shooter fled the scene, leaving no signs of forced entry into the home. Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage to gather more information about the incident.

Three confidential law enforcement sources, familiar with the investigation, indicated that Kruger’s death may have resulted from a domestic dispute or had ties to drugs. Disturbing text messages between Kruger and a former partner were discovered during the investigation. Additionally, methamphetamine was found in Kruger’s bedroom.

Kruger, a journalist and former city spokesperson, dedicated his work to advocating for marginalized communities in Philadelphia. He played a significant role in increasing support for homeless individuals, those battling addiction, and the LGBTQ community. Mayor Jim Kenney expressed his shock and sadness over Kruger’s passing, praising his commitment and passion for the city.

In recent years, Kruger returned to journalism and wrote freelance articles touching on topics such as LGBTQ issues, city and state politics, and more. He openly shared his experiences with homelessness, addiction, and living with HIV, using his platform to raise awareness and advocate for others in similar situations.

Kruger’s friends and family are now working to find a new home for his beloved cat, Mason. District Attorney Larry Krasner pledged to collaborate closely with law enforcement to bring justice to Kruger’s case.

This investigation remains ongoing as authorities work tirelessly to uncover the full details surrounding Kruger’s tragic death.
