SAN FRANCISCO — A Delta Airlines pilot was arrested Saturday night at San Francisco International Airport following allegations of child sexual abuse stemming from an investigation in Contra Costa County.
The incident unfolded shortly after Delta Flight 2809, which originated in Minneapolis, safely landed. Authorities reported that a team of local and federal agents boarded the aircraft and alertly proceeded to the cockpit to apprehend the 34-year-old pilot. He is now facing felony charges relating to sexual acts with a child under the age of 10 and is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on a substantial bond of $5 million.
According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation into the pilot began in April 2025 after they received a report regarding potential sex crimes against a minor. While the Department of Homeland Security confirmed their assistance in the arrest, they clarified that the case itself is not a federal investigation. Additionally, charges related to child sexual abuse material have been leveled against the pilot.
Witnesses aboard the flight captured the tense moment on video, showing agents moving through the aisles as passengers prepared to deplane. Sarah, a passenger who asked not to disclose her last name, recounted how approximately ten agents, some identifiable as Homeland Security personnel, swiftly entered the cabin. “They barged through and stormed the cockpit,” she described. “They removed the co-pilot, cuffed him, and brought him back down the aisle. It was quite shocking.”
Many passengers, including flight attendants, appeared bewildered by the sudden turn of events. Despite the flight’s safe arrival, the dramatic incident left a lasting impression on Sarah. “It was scary. It was traumatic to watch,” she said, expressing her confusion about the unfolding situation.
FAA records indicate that while the pilot may have previously resided in the East Bay, he is now based in Miami, Florida. He earned his pilot’s certificate in 2022, being qualified to operate 757 and 767 aircraft.
This arrest occurs amid heightened concerns regarding passenger safety and several recent airline incidents. Just days before, a grandmother on another Delta flight heroically prevented a passenger from attempting to breach the cockpit. In a separate event, a Southwest Airlines flight made an abrupt descent to avoid collision with another aircraft, unnerving its passengers. Over the weekend, chaos ensued on an American Airlines flight departing Denver, where passengers had to evacuate after an aborted takeoff.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office plans to release more details on this case later. As investigations continue, it remains unclear how this incident will impact Delta Airlines and the overall aviation community.
