San Francisco, CA – After facing backlash and negative reviews from Helldivers fans, PlayStation has made a U-turn on the requirement for Helldivers 2 players to link their PSN accounts. The controversial policy, which would have forced users to connect their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts, was met with strong opposition.
On May 6, PlayStation announced on their official account that they had listened to the feedback and decided not to move forward with the mandatory account linking. This decision comes after tens of thousands of negative reviews and the delisting of Helldivers 2 in 177 countries due to the unpopular requirement.
Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt expressed frustration over the controversy and admitted fault in not properly notifying players about the account linking requirement. Following discussions with PlayStation, the decision was made to scrap the policy and allow players to enjoy the game without the mandatory linking.
Fans of Helldivers 2, relieved by the reversal of the decision, are now hopeful that future games will not include similar requirements. Despite the setback, the game continues to be popular, with an estimated 8 million units sold as of March 2024.
The focus can now shift back to the game itself, praised for its unique storytelling approach and success as one of the standout games of 2024. The community is looking forward to what the future holds for Helldivers 2, now that the controversial account linking issue has been resolved.
